The Effects of Music on Children

Whether it's scientific fact or merely observation, the effects of music on your child are evident. Try playing music for your child to improve his well-being, if not his smarts.

The Mozart Effect

In 1985, researchers at the University of California at Irvine found a link between listening to Mozart's sonata for two pianos in D major and an improvement in spatial reasoning skills among college students they tested. It seems that the students, after listening to the sonata, performed better on an IQ test than when they listened to a new age relaxation tape or complete silence. This famous study has since coined the term "Mozart Effect", and has encouraged the parents of young children to get their children listening to music, especially classical music, at an earlier age.

Even though the Mozart Effect has been challenged and refuted since the study, the benefits of music making children more relaxed, more fun-loving, and greater lovers of music are definitely solid. Mothers have long attested to the soothing power of a song to calm a hysterical baby.

Effects of Music on Preemies

Brigham Young University conducted a study on premature infants by playing the preemies music in their intensive care units. The babies that were played cassettes of sung lullabies in their isolettes showed a greater weight gain, lower blood pressure and a stronger heartbeat than the premature infants who weren't played the music.

Not Necessarily to Make You Smarter

Most doctors concur that having your unborn child, baby, toddler,or preschooler listen to music is not going to necessarily make them a genius or super-baby. Although scientific studies may have shown an improvement in certain skills after listening to music, that might have more to do with music's relaxing effects rather than brain power. Even still, children who learn to play a musical instrument in grade school appear to gain greater spatial reasoning skills (the skills it takes to do math) than those who don't.
